Bridal Shop: Blaze staggers Waldo and business owners

But amid the destruction, a bridal shop works to get its brides outfitted.

For more than 80 years Kansas Citians gathered for food and fun at a building in the midst of the eclectic Waldo neighborhood.

On Friday they watched in horror and grieved for dreams lost as the two-story structure at 75th and Washington streets was engulfed in flames. Even as they prayed for the wellbeing of injured firefighters, they worried about the fire’s impact on their neighborhood and their lives.

Some business owners lost everything. Others will lose money because smoke from the fire has forced them to close temporarily.

But beyond the financial toll is the loss of a historic building in a neighborhood noted for its older structures, said Marti Lee, executive director of the area’s business association. more
